Dr. Ali Zarrabi is an Associate Professor and Principal Investigator at SUNUM, Nanotechnology Research and Application Center, Sabanci University, Turkey. His current research interests include Nanobiotechnology, Nanomedicine, Drug Delivery Systems, Nanotheranostics, Nanomaterials, SPIONs and Surface Modifications. Dr. Zarrabi has been a member of American Chemical Society (ACS), British Society for Nanomedicine, European Society for Nanomedicine, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Nanotechnology Strategic Committee of University of Isfahan, Biotechnology Strategic Committee of University of Isfahan, Talented Students Committee of University of Isfahan, Iranian Genetic Society and Iran Nanotechnology Initiative. He received his B.S. of Chemical Engineering from Isfahan University of Technology, Iran, in 2004, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, in Chemical Engineering (2007) and Nanobiotechnology (2011), respectively. He is now an Associate Editorial Board Member of Current Nanomedicine (Bentham Science) and Austin Food Sciences (Austin Publishing).

Nano-Theranostics: The Novel Application of Nanotechnology in Simultaneous Diagnosis and Treatment of Disease

Abstract: The emergence of nanoscience and nanotechnology has created many hopes for the treatment of various diseases through the introduction of novel strategies. Since early diagnosis and monitoring of diseases provide relatively harmless benefits, integrating the therapeutic properties of nano-systems with diagnosis features could lead to produce multifunctional nanocarriers recognized as nano-theranostics. These are a class of nano-systems with the ability of simultaneous diagnosis and therapy, in which the diagnostic material emerges as the therapeutic agent itself or in combination with a therapeutic species. So far, several types of nanomaterials have been introduced with the ability to enhance the quality of imaging techniques like magnetic nanoparticles in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), gold nanoparticles in computed tomography (CT), and quantum dots in fluorescence diagnosis. In this talk, a synopsis of 10 years of activity in the “Nano-theranostics” field at my research group will be reported and discussed.
Dr. Ali Zarrabi was elected as one of the Top Scientists of University of Isfahan.
He received the Top Scientist Medal form Dr. Zargarpoor, the Isfahan province governor.
